Arthur Shattuck

Arthur Shattuck was the son of Kimberly-Clark co-founder F. C. Shattuck and his wife, Clara Merriman Shattuck. Arthur was born April 19, 1881, in Neenah. He was sent to Europe to study piano in 1894 at age 13. He became a student of the famed Leschetizky School in Vienna, Austria, and made his European debut in 1902 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was only 21 years old.

In 1903, he established a permanent residence in Paris, France. At that time, Paris also home to such luminaries as Debussy, Saint Saëns, and Ravel, among others. Touring both Europe and the United States, Shattuck also performed for President and Mrs. Taft at the White House. He even arranged and played at several benefit concerts in Neenah with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his public concerts, Shattuck gave command performances for the Royal family of Sweden and the Queen of Rumania. He was also a regular guest in some of the great houses of Great Britain and the continent. He lived in New York City from the early 1930s until his death in October 1951.

You can listen to two of Shattuck's piano roll recordings here and here.

We recently received a donation from the Appleton Public Library of an Arthur Shattuck program from his February 23, 1924 concert at Lawrence Chapel in Appleton.
